New Arrivals

All refugees who are resettled by LFS are automatically enrolled in the Reception and Placement Program. This program is designed to help new arrivals, during their first 90 days, become acclimated to life in the Unites States.

Knowledgeable and dedicated case managers work with families and co-sponsoring organizations to:

  • Arrange housing
  • Facilitate access to social services and public benefits
  • Arrange health screenings and access to health care
  • Assist with school enrollment
  • Provide cultural education and self-sufficiency planning
  • Assist with communication needs
  • Provide support and welcome to all clients

LFS also ensures that all newly arrived refugees have access to English language classes or one-on-one tutoring to help them acquire the necessary language skills they need to thrive in their new home. In both Greensboro and Raleigh, refugees have the opportunity to access ESL instruction at LFS coordinated New Arrivals School. Classes are taught using curriculum designed to guide the student to self-sufficiency.  Additionally, in all three locations refugees and asylees are assisted in accessing free classes conducted throughout their communities by local schools and organizations.

Employment Services

Obtaining stable employment in the United States is one of the most critical steps a newly-arrived refugee must take on their path toward self-sufficiency.  Job development teams work hard to assist refugees and asylees in reaching their employment needs through skills assessments, job placement, job upgrade support, interpretation support, documentation support, employment and skills trainings, and on-going follow-up and support for both the employer and the employee.

Youth Services

In Columbia, SPLASH (www.lfscarolinas.org/splashcamp) is a summer day camp program created to help refugee and immigrant children between the ages of 4 and 15 to prepare for the academic programs and social interaction that they will find themselves in during the school year.
